I miss George Hurst. Al Stohlman pioneered the way to teaching leathercraft through his books. George Hurst pioneered the way to teaching leathercraft through video. Al Stohlman's books are still worth their weight in gold as far as I am concerned. Their is still something about opening an Al Stohlman book and staring at the illustrations to see what else you can glean. I dabbled in leathercarving when I was a teenager but was never very good at it and gave it up. In my 30's I looked into it again and became aware of his company at Hidecrafters. I purchased his VHS videos on tooling leather and really learned from there. For the first time I could see how wet to make your leather before carving. I could see what the proper color of burnish the leather would take on from proper moisture content when it was being tooled. I also purchased most of the George Barr series of tapes that George Hurst produced. I can truly say that it was George Hurst who truly taught me leather tooling through his videos what Al Stohlman tried to teach us in his books.

I learned all of my basic skills from watching George Hurst.

Love the descriptive words (flow, shade, contour, etc.) They help to understand what is being created. Fantastic teaching delivery. When we create, we are mirroring the likeness of God. From the beggining we immediately learn that God is a creator and expresses through creativity. When He completed His creation, He reviewed His handy work and said it was good! He was right!

Decorative Cuts are my greatest challenge. The trouble I have is when cutting over bumps from the inner work. My blade will slide out of line. It may be that I need to sharpen it enough to shave a cotton fly.

I have to make an unfortunate adjustment when holding my stamping tools because my left ring finger was cut off on a swab unit in the oilfields of South Texas. As a retired pastor, I have been tempted to write a book titled 'Tips on Leather Work for the Disabled'. Due to other physical limitations, I have learned several ways to improvise with everything from tooling to sewing. I just need to get out of the mid-amatuer apprentice stage of tooling. Maybe then, I could attract a leather company that would take an interest in sponsoring me as a spokesmen to help those with special needs enjoy the wonderful world of leather crafting. I love Jim and Elk Tracks Studio. He is a master leather artisan and legendary in the field. He is superior in his work and character.

Jim is my cousin, what a talented man. The leather work he does just amazes me to say the least. The knowledge, talent and the ability he has to teach is second to none. Proud to be able to have him for a cousin and the closest one I have.

I just watched this for the first time. I say first because I know I will watch it over and over. George was a mentor and inspiration but, most of all, he was a real friend. Thanks for sharing this video, Jim.

Just like everyone else, Mr. Hurst was there throughout my beginning in leathercraft. All those videos in the Tandy library. What a great man. Rest In Peace, and have eternal fun with Al and Ann.
